The History of the Texas Maritime Museum
The Texas Maritime Museum had its origin in the late 1970’s at Rockport’s annual fall
festival, Seafair, where presentations of antique outboard motors, fishing equipment and mounted fish drew enthusiastic crowds. By 1980, realizing the popularity of the annual exhibits and recognizing the potential of a permanent maritime museum, the community began the incorporation process to establish the Texas Maritime Museum Association, Inc. Construction of the museum building began in 1988 and the James H. Sorenson Building opened July 1,1989.
A new addition, the Lighthouse, was completed in July 2001 providing the Museum a new elevator, additional exhibit space and the “best view” in Rockport from a 48-foot high observation deck. Panoramic vistas of the picturesque Rockport Harbor, Aransas Bay, and the Intercoastal Waterway are enjoyed by visitors to the Lighthouse. July 1, 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Texas Maritime Museum’s official opening.
In 1987, the Texas Legislature named the Texas Maritime Museum the official Maritime Museum of the State of Texas by concurrent resolution from the Legislature. In July 2007, HCR 170 re-stated the original resolution, and “official” status in perpetuity. February
2008, the Texas Maritime Museum was named the “Official Best” Maritime Museum in Texas by NBC Media.
Since 1995, the Museum has hosted annual fund-raising events including the Mah Jongg Tournament, the Belle Ball, a formal Christmas gala held in December, and the Rockport Festival of Wine & Food held on the Museum Grounds over the Memorial Day weekend. All proceeds from these events assist with the daily operational needs of the Museum.
August 5, 2005 marks the most significant accomplishment in the history of the Texas Maritime Museum, thus far. Accreditation by the American Association of Museums was awarded on this day. The Texas Maritime Museum met the highest standard of excellence and achievement through leadership, professional operation, continued commitment to institutional improvement, and public service and accountability through fulfillment of our mission. Less than 10 percent of all museums in Texas have received accreditation.
The Robert J. Hewitt/ O'Connor Hewitt Foundation Maritime Collections and Education Center is the next phase in the museum’s ongoing commitment to excellence! The exterior was completed in May 2009, and the "Keepers of the Legacy" Capital Campaign has begun to complete construction. The new facility, a requirement by the museum's accreditation with AAM, will add a 1200 square foot education space, and expand the museum's collections space exponentionally. Contact the museum if you would like to make a donation to further this project!
