A Brief History of the

Texas Maritime Museum


  • June 1985 - Received 501(c)3 designation from the IRS as a non-profit organization.

  • May 1987 - Senate Resolution 57 established Rockport as home to the state maritime museum.

  • July 1, 1989 - Museum building opens.

  • 1990 - La Tortuga was built and sailed

  • February 1996 - 1st Annual Texas Maritime Museum Mah Jongg Tournament (Just celebrated the 12th).

  • May 1997 - 1st Annual Rockport Festival of Wines (Now the Texas Maritime Museum Festival of Wines & Culinary Arts)

  • December 1997 - 1st Annual Belle Ball to help fund the Day in the Life exhibit focusing on the excavation of LaBelle.

  • 2003 - "Maritime Light" Lighthouse and exhibit area opens.

  • 2003 - Introduction ofthe MariThyme Treasures Cookbook as a perpetual fundraiser for the museum.

  • July 1, 2004 - Celebrate 15 years as the Official Maritime Museum of Texas!

  • August 2005 - The Texas Maritime Museum receives designation as the 38th museum in Texas to be accredited by the American Association of Museums.

  • 2007 and beyond - Come SEA what happens!
